Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation is proud to announce that Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) has been ranked one of U.S. News & World Report’s “Best High Schools” for 2023. MVHS was named to the top 40% of the nation’s high schools and is now ranked 47th within Indiana and 16th in the Indianapolis metro area. Superintendent Dr. Jack Parker has scheduled three “Traveling Talks” throughout the Mt. Vernon community in 2023. These “Traveling Talks” are an opportunity for community members to communicate directly with Dr. Parker and share their hopes, questions, and/or concerns about Mt. Vernon schools. This casual dialogue is designed to connect the community with school leadership.
All five schools in the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation have earned a Highly Effective Schools Accreditation from Solution Tree. This accreditation is a significant achievement that reflects all five schools’ commitment to learning and maintaining the highest levels of educational quality. Mt. Vernon High School, Mt. Vernon Middle School, Fortville Elementary School, McCordsville Elementary School, and Mt. Comfort Elementary School earned this accreditation by driving permanent, positive, and significant impacts on student achievement.
The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) is pleased to announce that Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) has hired Dr. Kathryn Spangler as the Director of Bands, pending MVCSC Board of Trustees’ approval on Monday, June 19. She comes to Mt. Vernon most recently from her role as the associate director of bands and director of athletic bands at Indiana State University. Dr. Spangler has a vast 25 years of experience leading music departments in K-12 public schools and higher education.
Ms. Yi-Fan Lin, a Mandarin teacher at Mt. Vernon High School, is one of two fortunate teachers in Hancock County to be awarded a Lilly Endowment Teacher Creativity Grant. This fellowship program provides a select few Indiana teachers up to $12,000 allowing them to explore new opportunities that will inspire them and help in their teaching career. Ms. Lin plans to travel to various Chinatowns across the United States to help her deeper understand her heritage as an Asian American and share her findings with students.
Over Thanksgiving Break, around 60 students from the Mt. Vernon High School Band of Marauders traveled to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to perform in the ABC Dunkin' Thanksgiving Day Parade. The Band of Marauders decided to take advantage of the proximity to New York City and top off their trip with additional memorable experiences in The Big Apple. This trip was a well-deserved vacation after over 300 hours rehearsing in their nearly six-month long marching band season. Several of the students’ families were able to join the students on this eventful trip.
The Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new Fortville Elementary School (FES) and the Transportation Building was held on November 30 and began with a welcome from Superintendent Dr. Jack Parker.
Mt. Vernon High School senior, Amelia Smith, is giving back to her community in a very unique way. What started as a need to do something with the abundance of little makeup bags collected each month from a subscription service, quickly became a way to assist women in need. Amelia decided to fill the bags with feminine products, makeup and toiletries and deliver them to shelters in various surrounding counties: Marion, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, and Madison. With the help from her church, local shelters and her younger sister Calista, Amelia has been able to spread care all throughout central Indiana, while also learning a lot about the process of outreach for those needing shelters.
Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) students were encouraged to dream about their futures and were recently exposed to a variety of careers that align with academic pathways at MVHS. The one-day career exposure event, sponsored by the Mt. Vernon Education Foundation, offered a career exploration assembly to freshmen in the morning while sophomores and juniors were taking the PSAT. During this assembly, guest speakers from various career pathways shared detailed information about their jobs. In the afternoon, after students finished PSAT testing, all students attended a college and career fair where they were able to learn that it is never too early to start preparing for their futures.
The 2021-2022 school year has reached its end and, the Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) class of 2022 graduates celebrated with a commencement ceremony. Exactly 348 seniors were asked to walk across the stage to receive their diplomas, recounting all their hard work and dedication. Administrators and the School Board of Trustees then congratulated each graduate.
