Grading Policy

As we finish the year in eLearning, we want to address how students will be graded for their work.  Reporting progress and assessing learning is an important part of the learning process; however, we recognize that the significant difference in the delivery of eLearning instruction for this amount of time requires a different approach to grading.  Guidance from the Indiana Department of Education, as well as our own values that we “do no harm,” is the impetus for our approach to grading during these difficult times. Additionally, we also know that our previous deadlines for completing work doesn’t fit our current eLearning situation.  Thus, we have developed plans for how grades will be reported at the end of the term as well as when work will be due.


These are difficult times for us all.  We are in uncharted territory and our main focus is to be fair, equitable, and to do no harm.  Our goal is to come through these uniquely challenging times stronger and with a positive mindset that allows our students to take on future learning challenges with excitement and motivation.  Please remember to reach out to your school’s principal, counselor, and/or teacher with any learning or emotional needs your children may have.   1. Grading and Grade Reporting 

    1. (2nd-12th grade) - Students passing a course will receive an A+ for the 4th quarter grade.  Students failing a course will receive an F.  

      1. Traditional grades (A, B, C, D, F) will be provided for assignments based on participation, completion, and accuracy. 

      2. Grades will be converted to an A+ or an F at the end of the term for reporting purposes.  For example, if a student earns a 78% on his/her end of the quarter grade, the final grade will be reported as an A+.

      3. For any student with the potential to receive a failure, the teaching team and school administration will review the student’s work prior to reporting a final grade.  

      4. All High School students in a course eligible for “grade bumps” must at least achieve the following percentages to receive the additional weight to their A+.

        1. AP/ACP/DC → Must have at least an 87% to be eligible for added weight (1.0)

        2. Honors → Must have at least a 90% to be eligible for added weight (0.5)

        3. 3rd Year World Language → Must have at least a 95% to be eligible for added weight (0.25)

    2. (Kindergarten & 1st grade) - Students will have standards based grading suspended.  K-1 parents will receive regular feedback from the teachers related to their eLearning work. 

  2. Work “Due” for eLearning

    1. All assignments are due no later than 8:00 AM on the following Monday from the previous week’s work.



The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation's Grading Policy is as follows:


At the end of each quarter, final examinations will be given in all subjects. Exams are weighted 20% of the quarter grade unless other calculations are approved by the administration and clearly stated in course expectation sheet.


Two categories will determine those listed on the honor roll:
  * All A Honor Roll – All grades must be an A- or above
  * A/B Honor Roll – All grades must be a B- or above with at least one grade being an A
An incomplete in any course will make a student ineligible for any honor roll. 
All students are eligible for the honor roll in every nine-(9) week grading period.

Students will be graded at Mt. Vernon High School on a percentage basis.   Percentages will be converted to letter grades and the 4.0 scale as follows:

*Report cards will be distributed to students on the Thursday following the end of the quarter.
