The MVCSC is proud to announce that Superintendent Dr. Jack Parker has been named the 2024 Superintendent of the Year for District V by members of the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents (IAPSS). District V includes Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, Marion, and Shelby counties. Area superintendents selected Dr. Parker based on the nominees’ qualifications, accomplishments and impact on their school community.
All five schools in the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation have again earned a Highley Effective Schools Accreditation from Solution Tree. This accreditation is a significant achievement that reflects the commitment of all five schools to teaching and maintaining the highest levels of educational quality.
Many students from the senior class of 2024 were recognized for their outstanding achievements at Senior Honor Night, which was sponsored by the Mt. Vernon Education Foundation.
Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation is proud to announce that Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) has been ranked one of U.S. News & World Report’s “Best High Schools” for 2024. MVHS was named to the top 40% of the nation’s high schools and is now ranked 47th within Indiana and 15th in the Indianapolis metro area. The 2024 edition of Best High Schools includes a numerical ranking of nearly all public high schools nationwide – almost 18,000 of them.
As Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) students eagerly awaited outside with a sign to welcome students from Taipei Municipal Neihu Senior High School as they visited MVHS. The cultural exchange enabled the Taiwan and MVHS students to learn what education is like in the opposite country, improve their second language, and make new friends. The MVHS students in Mandarin classes were excited to welcome the 18 students and two administrators visiting the last week of April.
Ms. Ashley Gustin has been selected as the new principal of Mt. Vernon Intermediate School. Ms. Gustin comes to Mt. Vernon from South Madison Community Schools as an assistant principal at Pendleton Heights Middle School. In addition to her depth of qualifications and leadership skills, she also has experience opening an intermediate school with 1,100 students at Anderson Community Schools.
The criminal justice classes are among several CTE courses that will be moving to the Hancock County Career Center when it is completed and opens two years from now.
Students learning Mandarin at Mt. Vernon High School (MVHS) have developed new friendships with students from high schools in Taipei, Taiwan, thanks to the class pen pal project. Being the eighth school year of students writing letters, there is hope this year to meet several of their Taiwan friends when they visit the US this spring.
Mrs. Haley Frischkorn, MVCSC English Language Coordinator, is one of three fortunate teachers in Hancock County to be selected for the Lilly Endowment Inc. Teacher Creativity Fellowship Program. This fellowship program provides a select few Indiana teachers up to $15,000 allowing them to explore new opportunities that will inspire them and help in their teaching career. The grant is to fund teachers a renewal project to be renewed in their students’ education and experiences in the classroom through their teaching. Frischkorn plans to visit notable sites in New Zealand with her family to see their imaginations come to life. She has titled this plan, “There and Back Again: A Teacher’s Tale- Reignite the imagination by journeying through Middle Earth.”
Ms. Yi-Fan Lin, a Mandarin teacher at Mt. Vernon High School, is one of two fortunate teachers in Hancock County to be awarded a Lilly Endowment Teacher Creativity Grant. This fellowship program provides a select few Indiana teachers up to $12,000 allowing them to explore new opportunities that will inspire them and help in their teaching career. Ms. Lin plans to travel to various Chinatowns across the United States to help her deeper understand her heritage as an Asian American and share her findings with students.
