Curriculum

Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation is committed to providing a guaranteed and viable curriculum for all students.  A guaranteed curriculum ensures all students have the opportunity to learn the same essential learnings (ELs).  Our ELs are based on Indiana academic standards and are determined by our teacher teams to be "essential" for students to learn.  Standards are determined to be "essential" based on; endurance, leverage, readiness, alignment with standardized assessments, and teacher judgment. A viable curriculum ensures it is possible for all students to learn in the allotted time.  The quarter views listed below list the ELs students will be taught and assessed during each nine (9) week quarter.  The goal is for every student to become proficient in every EL by the end of the course or school year.  Below are linked documents that note the EL for each content area or course.

Instructional Resources
There are two distinct categories of materials and resources available at MVCSC.  The most prevalent resources are the adopted Instructional resources which are the primary resources used in instruction.  Supplementary instructional resources are resources teachers may choose to incorporate into the classroom to support the unique needs of the students in their classrooms.  These materials may be used to enrich and support the primary adopted instructional resources. Teachers carefully review any supplementary resources prior to them being used in the classroom.  Supplementary resources align with the Indiana Academic standards, are age-appropriate, and align with the district vision for curriculum, instruction, and assessment.  Each instructional recourse is an important part of a child's education.

MVCSC has developed processes and procedures for the selection of district-adopted instructional resources.  The process is explained HERE.  The following are MVCSC adopted instructional resources:

MVCSC measures student growth utilizing NWEA MAP assessments in grades K-10 and use NWEA MAP Fluency for grade K-2. Student growth is measured each fall, winter and spring. Teachers use NWEA scores to determine student growth areas, levels of understanding, and to help create differentiated lessons.  Schools use student score data as part of the decision making for student course placement and curriculum planning.

The Media Center's library collection plan that MVCSC uses is linked HERE

Kindergarten and 1st grades use a standards-based report card.  HERE is a video explanation of the standards-based report card.  HERE is a PDF document with the explanation as well.  Second grade through High School uses a traditional report card with the below Grading Scale.

Dyslexia Screening

In accordance with IDOE Dyslexia Guidance and Indiana Code, all school corporations and charter schools in Indiana must annually report dyslexia screening data. All students in kindergarten, grade one, and grade two are screened each school year for learning characteristics related to dyslexia. The selected universal screener used by MVCSC (NWEA Map Fluency) has been approved by the IDOE and meets all requirements listed within the guidance. Click HERE to view the 2021-2022 Annual Dyslexia Report for MVCSC.

MVHS Naturalization Examination Results
